Social anthropology is the social scientific study of societies in the present and the
past. As such, it includes disciplines labelled differently as "cultural anthropology",
"ethnology", or "Völkerkunde", as well as the disciplines engaged in the social
scientific study of regional or local traditions, such as ethnography, Volkskunde and
folklore studies.
Journals devoted to Oriental and African Studies and other regionally defined fields
are included, when they regularly publish contributions in social anthropology.
Social science journals which regularly publish a high number of "anthropology"
articles have been included, while journals that are merely used by anthropologists for
access to data gathered in other disciplines, are be included.
Evolutionary anthropology is more closely related to life science research (physical
anthropology). Top-journals from this field of anthropology (incl. notably: paleo-
anthropology) should, however, be included, where they publish material relevant to
interdisciplinary Humanities studies.

Anthropology

Archaeology covers the entire world and all time periods from the earliest humans to the
present, with numerous sub-fields. It deals with resources on the study of material
remains (artifacts, monuments, environmental remains, landscapes), and includes
methods of detection, analysis and, to some extent, preservation.
For a number of fields and subfields there are overlaps, e.g. for Ancient Art (with Art
History), for Anthropology, Byzantine Studies (mostly to be covered by History, but also
with Classical Studies and Art History), Heritage Studies (with History; here included
when focused on archaeological aspects), Museum Studies / Museology (with Art
History, History et al.), Numismatics (with Classical Studies and History), and general
Humanities. Ancient Art will be covered only when set in social and archaeological
contexts. Journals whose approach is purely art historical will not be covered.
Journals published by antiquities services and/or heritage authorities of specific countries
or regions, particularly those outside 'Europe' (as defined by the limits of ESF MOs), are
currently included, being important venues of publication for primary archaeological
data. Most do not have peer review processes.

Archaeology

The panel covers Art and Art History (including Architectural and Design History). All areas of visual expression
are included (painting; photography; cinema; sculpture; and architecture), as are applied and graphic arts. The
theory and criticism of art, together with the history of collecting and collectors, and the reception and fruition of art
during the time span chosen are included. Relevant aspects of museology, museum studies and the history of
materials and techniques as well as of restoration are also covered but a separate list for library and museum
studies is also expected to be developed. All these aspects are covered for the Western world (Europe and the
Americas), from the Byzantine period to the present only to avoid overlap with the panels for Archaeology and
Classical Studies. Ancient art is therefore expected to be included in the remit of this panel where the journal
takes an art historical approach, rather than an archaeological approach.

Business and Management

Classical studies cover the study of the linguistic, literary, political, social, economic,
religious, and cultural history of the Greek and Roman world, for which flexible and
continually changing borders are accepted. Chronologically, Classical Studies begin
with the first appearance of written texts (Linear B tablets, c. 14th century BC) and
end with the 7th century A.D. The reception of classical culture and texts is also
included.
Disciplines included are Classical philology (Greek and Latin literature and
language), ancient history, ancient topography, ancient law, Greek and Roman
religion, epigraphy and papyrology.
Journals that publish exclusively articles dedicated to material culture, its
interpretation, and the publication of objects of material culture, are left to the
Archaeology and Art History Panels. Included are a selection of archaeological
journals that regularly publish articles of a general interest for Classical studies as
defined above.
Some overlap occurs with the panels for Archaeology, History (BY - Byzantine
studies), Philosophy and Linguistics. Most of Byzantine studies is covered by the
History panel.

This panel covers the areas of gender studies, women's studies, men's studies, lesbian
and gay studies, queer studies, transgender/transsexual studies, and the study of
sexuality in general. Journals are included that take gender and/or sexuality as the
central issue(s) for investigation, as are journals that regularly publish a significant
amount of research that does so.
There are overlaps with all traditional Humanities fields, but the field also reaches
into such areas as health, technology and the law.
Within psychology , legal, social and health studies, journals are excluded that cover
gender-relatable topics without addressing their gender aspects as a central concern
(e.g.: general family studies would be excluded). Journals taking a strictly practical or
clinical approach were excluded.

Gender Studies

A journal included in this list has to contain studies on aspects of the past (worldwide; iron age to modern/contemporary times), including social, economic, diplomatic, political, environmental and intellectual history etc. Journals of the theory and philosophy of history are also included. There is some overlap with some of the other panels that have historical dimensions (e.g.: anthropology, archaeology, classical studies, gender studies). Byzantine studies are included in the History list. Journals on International Relations, which fall outside the scope of Humanities, and History and Philosophy of Science, which is covered by its own panel, are excluded.

History

History and Philosophy of Science covers the history of scientific disciplines, incl. medical and social science research and technology, as well as philosophical and social studies of science. In Europe, history and philosophy of science is not a well defined discipline in institutional terms. Scholars publish their work in journals not always specifically identifiable as belonging to this field. However, philosophers of science are more likely to publish in general philosophy journals than are historians of science to publish in general history journals. Journals dealing with the history and philosophy of the social sciences are included, as are journals dealing with the history and philosophy of logic, on the grounds that logic was a key area for philosophy of science.

Library and Information Science

The field of linguistics comprises all scholarly activities dealing with aspects of man's
language faculty as well as its specific historical manifestations (individual
languages). It also comprises the study of language history, variation, documentation,
acquisition and loss of language as well as the study of all aspects of language use in
specific contexts (communication, translation, argumentation, legal contexts, etc.).
The view of linguistics taken by the panel is a very broad one and includes all
subfields of General Linguistics, of Applied Linguistics and of communication
studies.
There is a potential overlap with many disciplines: anthropology, literature,
philosophy, psychology, education.
Note: the relevant journals in and for some language families are not yet fully
represented on the list.

Linguistics

Literature studies encompass fields such as literary theory, literary history, comparative literature, rhetoric, cultural
studies, folklore, poetics, theatre studies etc. The coverage of many national literary traditions with academic
publication cultures in national languages – relevant as forum languages - makes this a fragmented and very
diverse field.
The Panel does not cover literatures in non-European languages ("Oriental and African Studies"). Post-colonial
literatures in European languages remain, however, within the scope of this Panel. For the fields of pragmatics
and semiotics there are some overlaps with linguistics. For aspects of cultural and media studies there are
overlaps with numerous other panels.

Media Studies and Communication

This panel covers scholarly studies worldwide of all aspects and types of music in all
periods. It does not encompass composition, performance or any other practice-based
research.
Musicology is therefore taken in its broadest sense to include the study of the
following: classical music in its written and non-written forms; popular music; music
in connection with theatre, dance, film and other media; theory and analysis; music
and science; music technology; acoustics and psychoacoustics; ethnomusicology;
music psychology; music education; sociology of music; organology; iconography;
aesthetics and philosophy of music; performance practice; music therapy.
There may be some overlap with journals assessed by other panels that cover the
social and cultural dimensions of music.

Musicology

The panel covers all main areas of educational and pedagogical sciences, from
theoretical to applied and throughout all areas, such as educational psychology,
educational sociology, philosophy of education, adult education, early education,
general and subject didactics, educational policy, history of education, educational
measurement and assessment.
Journals of neighbouring disciplines are included if they frequently publish
educational research.

Pedagogical & Educational Research

This panel covers every branch of philosophy, incl. logic, metaphysics, epistemology,
ethics, and every period in the history of philosophy. Journals in neighbouring fields,
such as linguistics and cognitive sciences, are included, in so far as they welcome
and/or regularly publish papers by philosophers.
Philosophy of science has been largely excluded, as it is covered by another Panel.
Applied ethics is not covered (e.g.: business ethics, medical ethics, etc.).
Besides linguistics and philosophy of science, there is overlap with other fields such
as classical studies, Oriental and African Studies, psychology, religious studies.

Philosophy

Political Sciences and International Relations

This list covers all subcategories of the 2006 JCR Social Sciences edition for Psychology
(applied; biological; clinical; developmental; educational; experimental; mathematical;
multidisciplinary; and social). All of these journals appear also in PsycINFO. Relevant journals
from the 2006 JCR Social Sciences edition (also present in PsycINFO) are also included
(criminology; education & educational research; education-special; gerontology; family studies;
psychiatry; public, environmental &amp; occupational health; social sciences-biomedical; social
sciences-interdisciplinary; and substance abuse). The list also includes journals from the
categories for behavioral sciences and psychiatry of the 2006 JCR Science edition.

Psychology

The panel "Religious Studies and Theology" understood its scope to cover the two
complementary academic disciplines of (a) Theology (as widely understood in Europe) and (b)
Religious Studies (or "the Study of Religions" etc.). Journals were therefore considered, over a
wide range, which publish articles on religious systems and movements across the world, taking
into account their textual and intellectual traditions, their history and sociology, comparative and
theoretical questions, and so on. It is recognised that in most of its sub-disciplines (New
Testament Studies, Church History, etc.) academic theology makes use of several critical
methods which are used in the study of religions other than Christianity. On the other hand,
journals devoted mainly to the self-promotion of particular religious movements or standpoints
are not included.
